This month, get to know N Street Village volunteer Jaime Andrews. Jaime began her service as a fitness instructor with our Wellness Center over a year ago. She has gone on to coordinate two Zumbathon fundraising events, which have raised over $1,000 in support of our services, and leads a boot camp for N Street Village staff. Let’s get to know Jamie:
I am the founder and sole operator of Jaime Andrews Fitness, a boutique training studio offering personal training services and outdoor boot camp-style classes. My business was founded in October, 2011 and it has been the most exciting and rewarding journey! I graduated from St. Michael’s College in Vermont with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Women’s Studies. I recently began a Master’s program in Counseling Psychology and plan to integrate physical and mental fitness. I started volunteering at N Street Village about a year ago when a friend of mine introduced me to another volunteer who set up a tour and meeting. I have to admit, I spend most of my time working, studying and exercising, but also lead a local book club, try to make it to the movies at least twice a month and of course hang out with my friends.
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the DC area? I grew up in Walpole, MA, about 25 min south of Boston. I’ve lived in DC almost 8 years, with a brief hiatus in Orlando, FL.
What is your favorite D.C. landmark? I love to sneak away to E Street Cinema to catch a movie whenever I can find free time.
On a Saturday evening you will find me…These days, studying. In August, I begin a Master’s program in Counseling Psychology. Lots of reading and writing papers!
When I have free time I most enjoy…Working out with friends.
Where is the last place you traveled to? Wilmington, NC in August for my summer vacation.
Describe N Street Village in 3 words or less. Inspirational.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at N Street Village? Sharing my passion for fitness with the women at N Street Village and watching them embrace it.
What makes N Street Village unique to you? Physical fitness and wellness is an important part of the mission at N Street Village. With all of the struggles homeless and low-income women face, this could easily be an area overlooked. I appreciate that N Street Village promotes this as well as understands how important it is in developing empowerment. From the residents to the staff and volunteers, everyone is welcoming, friendly and compassionate. It is a beautiful community that I am honored to be a part of.
